You Can’t Take It With You (Netflix Ratings)
June 30th, 2009 by PhoebeSince March, we’ve offered an option to connect your Netflix account with Jinni. Until now, an optional feature has been importing ratings, so Jinni can quickly learn about your taste and recommend only movies you haven’t seen.
Unfortunately, Netflix has demanded that we remove the import ratings feature. If you already imported your ratings, they will stay on Jinni.
We, and many other developers and users, have been asking Netflix to open the ratings data for a while, to give you the choice to import your Netflix ratings as you wish. We’re working with Netflix now to initiate adding an import ratings option to their API - as your ratings actually belong to you.

Specifically why did they demand that you remove them? What was wrong with hosting them?

Netflix is working now on allowing developers to access ratings history. They preferred that we wait to offer this to Jinni users until it can be done via their API.

Savingmyratings.com is able to import and export Netflix ratings and other list: Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, Blockbuster.com, Flixster.com, IMDB.com, MovieLens.org, Yahoo Movies, and RottenTomatoes.

I tried savemyratings.com and found that it had numerous errors with the film identifications. Since I have over two thousand film ratings on Netflix that I was trying to export to Flixster I can’t really trust it, nor have the time to go through and make sure it’s all correct. I really hope Netflix does in fact open their API to allow exporting of a user’s ratings and subsequent importing to sites like Amazon and Flixster, etc.

What about ratings made on Jinni, can they be exported? I have several hundred ratings that I’d like to back-up and possibly re-use.
It’s a bit harsh of Jinni to expect other firms to release data when they don’t do so themselves.
Otherwise, I’m very happy with Jinni!
